I am a student of Native American Studies at Creighton University. When I hear about the injustices inflicted on Indians, it really angers me. No one -- I mean, NO one -- should ever have to go through something as traumatic as that. While I do agree with education, the idea of the mistreatment is outrageous. Indians getting their hair cut, and U.S. government says that that is supposed to civilize Indians?!

I have always been appalled at hearing about the injustices our government has created for Native Americans. It is sad to think that they thought it was OK to committ crimes against humanity by performing acts of hatred, deceit, abuse at all levels, and guilt. I'm not sure the average caucasion in this country is even close to being cognizant of these "conscious" attempts to thwart the very people who helped their forefathers survive here. If they took the time to know Native People, they might decide to offer a hand of help instead of one of hurt or a mouth of kindness instead of one of hate. I am a white male who has always respected people no matter what their national origin. I pray that our new "Multicultural" president will consider some of the crimes our government has committed against the 500 Nations, their own people, and other societies who have also felt the abusive effects of a government whose driving force is greed. Genocide is the manufactured result of the fear my forefathers exhibited because they were led by this same greed. If they would have done the right thing they would have tried to understand instead of trying to destroy. Little did they know, they were really destroying themselves. God bless us all. JJ thanks for educating us even more about the cycle of abuse we all seem to suffering from as a result of the ill of this government, I am at times ashamed to admit I call this home.

The cyclical nature of poverty is so difficult for people to understand, because on the surface is just looks like laziness. People don't understand the depths of white privilege and the policy decisions that have made it that way. Instead they, assisted by such shallow media sources as Fox News, USA Today and talk radio, are exposed to the surface of things.

My organization, United Indians of All Tribes Foundation -- which deals strictly with homelessness and family issues -- recently sent out an appeal for donations to 10,000 random peoples' addresses that we acquired from a mailing address list company. We received donations from about 15 people; we received racist hate-mail from about 40.

Wow.
I knew that the US government gave the Native Americans a raw deal, but I did not know that it went that far.
That's sad. I can understand how it could become a vicious cycle.
