Thank you Anthony for reading, and thanks for your comment!
Jonze is a very interesting filmmaker and I too look forward to his next project.
I haven't heard of any upcoming projects from him, however (shucks).
It sounds like you're a real film lover Anthony so I'll suggest two books that I enjoyed as they introduced me to
new viewing lenses.
"Reel to Real" by bell hooks discusses race, class, and women as depicted in American film and
"Save the Cat" by Blake Snyder discusses the structure used by many mainstream film scripts.

Cheers, Ryan

Ryan, absolutely spot on analysis. I literally just finished this movie about an hour ago, had a deep discussion with my gf about all the symbolism, spirituality, hero's journey, etc aspects of it (which she didn't get at all), and then jumped on the net to see if anyone saw through the same lens as I. I'm happy to find this!
I think this film excellently portrayed the hero's journey and offered some insight into a child's pattern of thinking. I definitely learned something. I almost feel like Joseph Campbell's himself helped direct this movie or at least added to the script. Since I've studied his work almost every 'epic' movie I see I am finding symbolism and the mythological framework at use. I hope to see more work from Jonze soon!

Ken, I'm curious to hear how a western child's growth differs from eastern?

Very good insight, Ryan. While the protagonist did not have to develop this way, development among Westenners is comon to this. You enlightened me about this movie. Very good.

Liam:
Thanks for your thoughtful comments and kind words!
I think your right that there is more there than may be easily accessed at the first watching and I plan on seeing it again (after hopefully doing some growing myself).
I am sure that speaking of "wild things" will come into some level of understood parlance in reference to this film and I wouldn't be surprised to see elements integrated into therapeutic or counseling contexts.
If nothing else, the soundtrack is a moving piece of art and I'm greatly looking forward to Jonze' next work.
Cheers, Liam!
